Bildr is a simple no-code app builder that creates all kinds of native mobile e-commerce apps. Ideal for users with some technical background, Bildr’s drag-and-drop interface is complemented by robust backend integrations.

This article will discuss:

  • An intro to Bildr
  • Reviewing the building interface, features, and more
  • Bildr’s pros and cons
  • How to figure out if Bildr is a fit for you
  • Adalo, an easy Bildr alternative

Let’s start this Bildr review by looking at the platform’s capabilities and features.

‍

What is Bildr?

Bildr is a low-code app development platform that lets you create highly customized web apps, software solutions, and websites. It blends both no-code features, like a simple drag-and-drop editor, with low-code ones, such as the ability to patch in your own custom code.

While Bildr’s drag-and-drop interface is simple enough for non-techies, it’s best to have some technical background if you really want to leverage the platform. Knowing how databases and APIs work, coupled with being able to interpret JSON notation, will go a long way.

‍

How Does Bildr Work?

After signing up for Bildr’s free Explore Plan, you’ll answer questions about your coding experience and the type of app you aim to build. Then, you’ll be taken to a project dashboard where you can start building your app immediately or walk through a few tutorials.

If you want to learn a little about the platform before creating your app, undertaking a few tutorials might be a good idea. The education page is full of videos and documents guiding you on how to get started with Bildr, how to integrate other tools, and much more.

Once you’ve learned some Bildr knowledge and you’re ready to start creating your own app, you can connect a pre-existing database. Bildr connects with popular databases like Xano, Airtable, Supabase, and a few others.

No database, no problem — you can build a database from scratch using Bildr.

Then, choose a template or start from scratch. Bildr doesn’t have the most extensive template library in the world — there are only about 15 to select from.

Main Functions: The Building Interface

Bildr’s building interface, located near the center of your screen, allows for the easy construction of your app using a drag-and-drop editor. This nifty tool, common in most no-code platforms, lets you upload photos, drag over elements like forms and buttons, and arrange them to your liking using your cursor.

On the left-hand side of your screen, you’ll see the component library, which contains a variety of prebuilt elements, such as buttons, input fields, containers, headers, and more. To begin customizing, you simply drag the desired components onto the canvas.

Then, use your properties panel on the right side of the interface to fine-tune attributes. You can modify styling elements like color, size, and borders, as well as configure each element’s positioning with padding, margins, and alignment. This powerful customization capability lets you create an app that aligns with your needs and tastes.

Integrations and Tools

One of Bildr’s core strengths is its ability to integrate with external APIs, allowing you to fetch data from various sources and then display and manipulate it directly in the app. If you’re aiming to create data-driven apps like CRMs, dashboards, and e-commerce platforms, this feature can sprinkle in some rocket fuel.

Bildr also integrates with popular services like Stripe for payment processing, Firebase for real-time databases, and authentication tools like Auth0 to keep your app secure. These integrations also help streamline critical app functionalities without requiring extensive setup or coding, giving you some advanced features without too much fuss.

Bildr’s Key Features

Heaps of Design Freedom

You won’t feel constrained when you’re using Bildr’s app-building interface: It offers unmatched design flexibility through its drag-and-drop builder, allowing users to create nearly pixel-perfect, fully customized web applications without constraints.

While it doesn’t rely heavily on templates, Bildr lets you unleash your inner Picasso with its blank canvas approach, allowing you to create unique interfaces and layouts. This feature is ideal for both beginners who want simplicity and advanced users seeking granular control over their designs.

Data Binding and APIs

Users can visually bind API responses to UI components, enabling real-time updates and interactions without writing code. For those with technical expertise, Bildr also allows the customization of API calls, headers, and parameters to meet specific project requirements and gives you pinpointed control over data transfer.

If you’re a major techie, you’ll be able to configure your APIs to your heart’s desire. Further refine your API calls by customizing headers, query parameters, and payloads, ensuring compatibility with complex backend, and commanding all incoming data to do your bidding.

Workflow Automation

Last but definitely not least are Bildr’s workflow automations, which are a cornerstone of its platform. These let you define how your app behaves in response to specific actions, triggers, or events.

Just use the visual editor to set up the following workflows:

  • Triggers are events such as button clicks, page loads, or form submissions that initiate a workflow. For instance, whenever a user submits a form, sending an email is triggered.
  • Conditions act as decision-making steps, and allow for logic-based branching by evaluating data or user inputs before executing further actions. This helps you organize your data down to a T.
  • Actions are the final steps in the workflow, and include operations like updating a database, sending an API request, navigating between pages, or displaying dynamic content.

Pros and Cons of Using Bildr

Like everything in this world, Bildr has its highlights and hangups. This list of pros and cons illustrates them:

Pros

  • Bildr’s drag-and-drop interface is very powerful, and you don’t need to be a computer science PhD to master it — it functions a lot like advanced graphic design software.
  • If you’re working on an app with a team, Bildr allows for real-time collaboration so everyone can see changes and updates as they happen.
  • Know how to write commands in JavaScript, CSS, and Python? You can plug them into your Bildr app, creating unique functionalities you can’t find anywhere else.

Cons

  • If you want to create an app for the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, you’ll need to look elsewhere. Bildr only lets you build web apps and Progressive Web Apps (PWAs) and these do not publish directly to the app stores.
  • Bildr is mainly designed to create internal business apps for CRM, project management, and more. You might find it challenging to create a simple scheduling app for your salon or a takeout app for your restaurant.
  • Bildr doesn’t offer many templates. This means you’ll need to have a clear conceptual understanding of how you want your app to look before you start building it — if you don’t, your app creation could take a long time.
    ‍

Who Is Bildr Suited for?

Bildr is a versatile platform ideal for individuals and small organizations seeking to create custom web applications for internal business use.

While its building interface and robust capabilities are particularly geared toward non-technical folks, being able to squeeze all the juice out of its powerful API and backend features will require technical knowledge.
‍

Is Bildr Right for You?

If you’re a developer or at least have some technical background, you probably possess enough skills to use Bildr comfortably. You’ll also be able to create a very powerful backend, complete with a robust set of data-harnessing APIs.

However, if you’re building an app for a large organization, Bildr might not have the storage or scaling capabilities you need. For instance, the Pro Plan, which is one of the top Bildr pricing tiers, only allows up to 250,000 database records — a mere drop in the bucket for even some medium-sized organizations.
