When Richard Morrow and I started BoozApp, not a single US distillery publicly announced pricing on their bottles. Not that we heard of, anyway. 2 years later, everything changed. In 2020, whiskey collecting picked up like Tamagochis in 1997. You'd walk into a store, see a bottle, have zero idea if $150 was a steal or a scam. The secondary market was pure chaos. Yet EVERYONE was talking about pricing of bottles, with no basis for their claims. So we got to work. First on a spreadsheet full of publicly-accessible data on what the govt was buying whiskey for, then an idea came: let's build an app so other people can contribute to reporting pricing, ala Gas Buddy. Of course, neither of us were even close to being developers; then Simon Turner suggested we try a little tool called Adalo--which was like WordPress for apps. At the time, that WAS as powerful to us as ChatGPT is to us now. An article in Gear Patrol wrote about us and our pension for pricing the unpriceable, even before we launched. That got us attention, bigly. So we launched early, and immediately got 5k signups. Fam, the app was in BLACK AND WHITE - we hadn't even designed more than wireframes. Still, people came. And kept coming. Within 2 years, over 50k people were using BoozApp monthly to log prices and manage their collections. Nothing revolutionary on the tech side -- just a really clear problem and a community that wanted it solved. Then something weird happened, almost all at the same time. Distilleries started announcing their own bottles' pricing (MSRP) publicly. BoozApp had grown to the point that the industry ACTUALLY shifted, and for the better. Knowing the crowd was going to surface it anyway via the app, distilleries realized they'd rather control the narrative. We didn't ask them to do this. We didn't partner with them. We just made the information so accessible that hiding it became a worse strategy than sharing it. When we started BoozApp, Rich & I on a roadtrip came up with the values we wanted this business to have. Transparency was at the very top of the list. The thing about making products is, sometimes the biggest impact isn't a feature you ship. It's the behavior change you force on an entire industry because a value you instilled deeply in the product became the effect you had on the community you served.
